The Workshop on ICT Strategic Planning in Parliaments of the Caribbean, held from 27 to 29 September 2010 in Bridgetown, Barbados, provided a regional platform to exchange practices among the Caribbean parliaments on the potential of ICT in parliament and on the importance of strategic planning for its effective adoption and integration in parliamentary processes. The Workshop, co-organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, through the Global Centre for ICT in Parliament, and the Caribbean Centre for Development Administration (CARICAD), focused on experiences and methodologies to better plan ICT processes in the legislative environment.

The event, opened by the Speaker of the House of Assembly of Barbados, brought together 26 participants representing 12 of the 16 beneficiary countries, namely: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. Participants included Clerks/Secretaries General, ICT Directors and IT staff from parliaments in the region.

Participants were briefed on the key steps of the ICT strategic planning process in parliament through the analysis of best practices and case studies. On the last day of the workshop participants discussed the next phase of the project during which technical assistance will be made available to those parliaments willing to engage in a strategic planning exercise. The beneficiary parliaments expressed interest in receiving the technical mission and indicated the priority areas where assistance is needed. The timing of the technical missions was discussed taking into account the needs of the parliaments and national circumstances. The missions are expected to start in February 2011.
